My heels have taken a beating this summer due to wearing sandals or flip-flops everyday. I glanced through my (ad) Buttered Life: Summer Edition e-Book  and found a great base recipe for making a foot bar. Since I now keep all the basic DIY lotion ingredients on hand, I was able to whip a couple foot bars up in no time!

Homemade Foot Bar with Essential Oils

When I decided to make these foot bars, I also had my son in mind. He was getting ready to go to encampment with Civil Air Patrol and I had a feeling that he might be getting a few blisters on his feet since he didn’t break in his boots very well. I also wanted a way for him to apply Thieves essential oil in order to help keep his immune system up. I knew he wouldn’t bring essential oils and I was pretty sure CAP officials wouldn’t know what it was and might consider it contraband. So I made a foot bar that would help heal his blisters and sore feet. Easy to pack, carry, and use!

Foot Bar Ingredients

Supplies:

Organic expeller-pressed coconut oil

Shea Butter

Beeswax

Essential Oils – I used Thieves and Lavender. Another good oil would be Melaleuca (alternifolia) essential oil

Deodorant Containers, New & Empty or mini-loaf pans

measuring ingredients

I love my electronic scale! I can weigh an ingredient then zero-out (tare) and continue weighing and adding everything I need in one container! The coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax are all proportional amounts.  I did about 3.5 oz. of each — adding slightly more beeswax to make sure it would be firm for the 90+ degree weather we had been having.

Melt it all in a double-boiler, stirring with a wooden craft stick or skewer. Once it is melted, let it cool slightly before adding in your essential oils. I did about 20 drops of Thieves and 15 drops of Lavender. Pour into empty deodorant containers and let cool.

Once you have your homemade lotions pantry stocked (coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax and therapeutic- grade essential oils), it is easy to make your own salves, lotions, insect repellent bars and lip balms.  I love having a healthier alternative to store-bought products!
