This Christmas season we will be doing Truth in the Tinsel advent with my 3 girls ages 7 – 3. This morning my older daughter and I worked on getting the supplies ready for the month. I know that if I don’t have the craft supplies on hand then it won’t get done. For some days I actually prepped the craft, other days I just threw all the supplies in the bag and will prep that day. Now last year seeing other moms post similar photos overwhelmed me greatly. It looks more complicated than it is! You do not have to do a craft every day. You do not have to do a lesson every day. You can easily customize The Truth in the Tinsel to make it work for your family. (Last year we only did the printable ornaments.)
Today was day 1 ~ The Light of the World. We made the craft and colored the printable ornament too. Why do both? Well I have 3 girls and 3 “special” advent activities each day. 1 child removes the advent chain link. 1 child colors the printable ornament and 1 child put the star sticker on our foam advent scene. All three girls do the craft! :)
This year I decided that we would place the colored paper ornament into a glass ornament. I purchased 2 boxes of 2 5/8″ glass ornaments from my local craft store. Then I printed out the Truth in the Tinsel ornaments scaled at 75%. Use regular paper. You could also use vellum for a neat touch.
After the ornament is colored, cut it out and punch a small hole at the top. Thread embroidery floss through the hole and tie a knot. Slightly roll the ornament and push into the glass ornament being sure to hold on to the string. Once the paper is positioned correctly, tape the string to the neck of the glass ornament. Use a skewer to help unroll the paper. Place the metal cap back on, add ribbon and hang on your tree! Now you could also add some seed beads or fun season confetti in the glass ornament too. I wouldn’t use glitter though as it sticks to the inside of the glass and makes it hard to see the paper ornament.
Truth in the Tinsel Day 1 Craft:
We made a light and talked about Jesus being the Light of the World. The only craft tip I can give is that an Exacto-knife works much better than blunt-tip kid scissors when cutting out this template. Yes, the directions called for the Exacto, but of course I had no clue where mine was when I needed it. 
My favorite pair of CutterBee scissors went MIA too. Those work just as well as an Exacto knife.
My 3yr. old thought this was an awesome craft! In fact after this she made a tissue paper stained-glass heart. My 5 year old humored me today. My 7 year old thought this was fun and is really looking forward to doing a craft a day.
I love a simple craft that helps remind my kids about Jesus. We hung one on the tree and two in the window.
