Learning About the Southeastern United States

Over the past few weeks my co-op class has been learning about the Southeast United States.

Each class we do basic review of continents and regions of the United States. I try to mix in as many learning styles as possible into each class session. We also watch a couple of our favorite Learning the States videos each week. Their favorite is Tour of the States.

Literature Connection

The first book we read was Stitchin’ and Pullin’ a Gee’s Bend Quilt  (afflink) by Patricia C. McKissack. While I read, the students colored their own Gee’s Bend inspired quilt coloring page.

The following week we read Cotton Mill Town by Kathleen Hershey.

Book Summary: “Speaking in the voice of the child she was when ice-cream cones were a nickel, the author reminisces about visiting her grandmama in North Carolina.”

Learning about the southeast region of the U.S.

We also worked through our Southeast region booklet from Teachers Pay Teachers .

Then for review each child cut the puzzle out and turned it upside down on the table. I put them in pairs and then would ask each pair to identify whatever Southeast state I called out. If they could correctly locate it on the wall map, then they got to turn over a piece of their puzzle. Winner was the team with all the pieces turned over. After the game, students glued the completed puzzle on to construction paper.

This is an introductory class to the U.S. so I am not expecting mastery at all. It is exciting to see the students be able to identify more and more states on the map each week!
